TikTok and USA: no agreement found, discussions continue
The United States and ByteDance, which runs TikTok, have not reached an agreement on the sale of the app’s assets. The deadline was Friday, but the situation stagnates today.
Discussions continue for now between TikTok and the United States. For their part, American users can continue to use the social network normally.
A Treasury Department official said the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) is engaging with ByteDance “To complete divestment and other measures necessary to resolve national security risks”.
As a reminder, the United States accuses TikTok of collecting user data to share it with China. Washington believes the application poses national security risks. But the social network ensures that this is not the case.
A preliminary agreement was reached in September between ByteDance, Walmart and Oracle so that the two American companies take a stake in a new entity. She will oversee TikTok’s operations in the United States. However, there remains an important blockage: the shareholding structure of the future company, which is called TikTok Global.
