Those were the best commercials in the tech industry
No time right now?
At the Super Bowl, companies pay more than five million US dollars for half a minute of airtime. We take a look at how Amazon, Uber, Reddit, and other tech companies took advantage of the expensive ad space this year.
The price for half a minute of advertising at the final of the American football league NFL, known as the Super Bowl, has decreased slightly compared to the previous year. In 2020 companies paid $ 5.6 million for a 30-second spot, this year it was “only” $ 5.5 million. With Coca-Cola, Audi and Hyundai, several large corporations that usually buy Super Bowl advertising space have decided against this time. Google, Microsoft and Facebook have also saved the money this year, unlike in 2020. However, the cancellations of many big brands have meant that several tech companies were able to get advertising space at the Super Bowl for the first time.

Super Bowl 2021: These were the commercials in the tech industry
Amazon
As in previous years, Amazon will again be promoting the Alexa voice assistance system in 2021. The e-commerce giant remains true to its previous strategy and relies on star power this time as well: Instead of comedian and presenter Ellen DeGeneres, who was featured in last year’s Alexa spot, this time the main role goes to actor and director Michael B. Jordan.
About Eats
In order to promote the food delivery service Uber Eats, the ride sharing company hired actors Mike Myers and Dana Carvey to slip into the roles of the main characters of the 90s comedy “Wayne’s World” again. So that the younger generation also benefits, there is also an appearance by the rapper Cardi B.
Doordash
The US Uber Eats competitor Doordash also relies on stars from old times: The commercial shows some of the most famous dolls on Sesame Street. There is also music by rapper and actor Daveed Diggs.
Logitech
Logitech has benefited significantly from the pandemic. Sales of webcams alone have quadrupled. Apparently, the peripheral manufacturer now has enough money for the first Super Bowl commercial in the company’s history.
Klarna
The Swedish fintech Klarna has also decided for the first time to use the Super Bowl to advertise its own payment service in the USA. The main role went to actress and comedian Maya Rudolphs.
Squarespace
The website builder Squarespace had the Dolly Parton hit “9 to 5” rewritten to “5 to 9” this year.
Robinhood
Probably the most controversial advertisement at this year’s Super Bowl comes from the trading app Robinhood. The message of the commercial that we are all investors caused criticism on the internet because the provider had recently temporarily suspended trading in Gamestop’s papers.
The short Reddit commercial was much better received by Wallstreetbets’ small investors. According to the company, the entire marketing budget was spent on the only five-second advertisement.
E-trade
The electronic trading platform E-Trade ran another Super Bowl commercial in 2021. E-Trade has been part of the investment giant Morgan Stanley since 2020.
Indeed
The job search engine Indeed also ran a commercial at the Super Bowl for the first time.
Vroom
The US online used car marketplace Vroom will also be there for the first time.
Mercari
The Japanese Ebay competitor Marcari has been active in the USA since 2014. Considered one of the first Japanese unicorns, the marketplace raised $ 1.2 billion when it went public in 2018.
Inspiration 4
Under the name Inspiration 4, this first purely civil space mission on board a SpaceX rocket is set to go into space this year. The whole thing is financed by the US billionaire Jared Isaacman, who on the one hand collects donations for a children’s hospital with the project, but on the other hand also advertises his payment service provider Shift4Payments.
Fiverrr
The freelancer marketplace Fiverrr will also launch a Super Bowl advertisement for the first time in 2021. The company recently benefited from rising unemployment due to the corona pandemic, which caused more people to offer their services via the platform.
General Motors
The US automaker General Motors is not a classic tech company, but this year’s commercial is about electric mobility. In the clip we see the actor Will Ferrell, who drives to Scandinavia upset by the high electric car quota in Norway.
Cadillac
The General Motors brand Cadillac is also promoting an electric car. The automobile brand follows the example of Uber and brings Edward back from the 1990s with scissorhands.
