How to hide Instagram likes

The update has been in the air for a while, but has now officially been released. It is now possible to hide the number of likes on Instagram. As a result, others cannot see how many people have given your photo or video a heart.

If you turn this option on, you will no longer see how many likes others have received on Instagram. Below we explain how to set this up: you can also ‘just’ leave the situation as it was.

How to hide likes on Instagram:

  1. Download the latest version of Instagram on your iPhone;
  2. Open Instagram and go to the settings (tap your profile icon at the bottom right and then the three dashes at the top right);
  3. Choose ‘Privacy’, ‘Messages’ and slide the switch at ‘Hide Likes and Views’;

Then the likes on Instagram are hidden. Others only see with your messages whether a photo or video has received hearts. In that case it says “Liked by [vriend] and others”.

Hide number of likes per post

If you enable the option, you will no longer see how many likes others have received. If you think this is a bit too drastic, you can also arrange the option by individual mail. In that case you can hide the number of likes with one photo, and not with the other:

  1. Go to the post for which you want to hide the number of likes;
  2. Tap the three dots;
  3. Choose ‘Hide number of likes’.

The Instagram update is rolling out gradually. Don’t see the option in the settings menu yet? Then you have to be patient: it will be your turn.

Update was in the air

The new Instagram option has been around for some time. As more and more is becoming clear about the negative effects of social media, the photo app is trying to become more friendly and inclusive.

For example, since a few weeks Instagram has also taken tougher action against DMs (private messages) that may be hurtful or shocking, for example because they contain swear words. These types of potentially hurtful messages are now better filtered.
