This means the new Dutch drone rules for you

Attention all owners of a drone, because from now on new rules apply to Dutch (and European) users. Check here what is changing.

From this year on, the European rules regarding the use of a drone will change and that also applies to Dutch pilots. A lot will change now that the new legislation comes into effect. This could mean, for example, that you have to get a flight license or have to register. This is all changing.

New Dutch drone rules

On December 31, the new European rules for flying a drone came into effect, which also applies to Dutch drivers. The Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management warns on Facebook, among others, that the new rules are in force.

And they are quite intense, as many drone enthusiasts will confirm. For example, from now on you must always register with the RDW if you have a drone. In most cases you even have to get a flight license! Below you can check the general rules, as formulated by the national government.

  • As the owner of 1 or more drone (s) (operator) you register with the RDW
  • Are you flying with the drone? Then you need to get a flight license. First you do a knowledge test at a flying school. Then you apply for a flight license at the RDW.

Exceptions

But it is more complicated than that. Other rules may apply for a ‘drone with a low risk’. For all drones under 250 grams you do not need a flight license and you only need to register it if a camera is attached. In fact, for toy drones up to 250 there are no extra rules at all.

From 500 grams you must also stay away from people and as the drone gets heavier, even more restrictions apply. For even higher risks (higher in the air, with people in the neighborhood) a permit must even be applied for.

In short, it has become a lot more difficult to fly a drone without too much fuss. Unless it weighs a maximum of 249 grams, which many manufacturers such as DJI respond to.
