This is what the use of 5G in cars looks like. We saw him live in Bratislava

As part of the 5G Automotive project, in which the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering STU, the Faculty of Informatics and Information Technologies STU and the company Orange cooperate, we had the opportunity to see one of the uses of the most modern 5G network live.

No, it’s not just about downloading data faster and surfing the internet. Lower latency and higher speeds bring benefits that can be used in many areas. For example, in the automotive industry.

5G will also be used in the automotive industry

We saw live the integration of the 5G network directly while driving an electric car. This is the first evidence of a revolution that 5G networks can mediate in the coming years.

Data from a real driving vehicle were paired with a virtual computer model and all technical operating parameters from the vehicle were transmitted online to a central computer. Subsequently, they were processed and could be used to optimize the ride. This is the first step for an intelligent future for transport in general using the 5G network.

“This decade is a period of the biggest changes in the history of the automotive industry. The biggest challenges are alternative drives, fuels, and autonomous control systems, ”said Professor Ľubomír Šooš, Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering STU in Bratislava.

“We are pleased that the 5G and Autonomous Transport project also demonstrates the functionality and effectiveness of linking research with the practice we are all calling for. I believe that it will also encourage other partners to cooperate with the research and education sphere, “said Ivan Kotuliak, Dean of FIIT STU.

“5th generation networks bring not only higher speeds and lower response, but also a completely new definition of the mobile network. Compared to the previous ones, they still have the greatest potential to change the way people, but also companies, use technology. We will fully appreciate the possibilities of the 5G network only in the future, I am glad that today we were able to look into it thanks to the 5G Automotive project, ”says Eric Maintenay, Director of Information Technology and Networks at Orange Slovensko.

Data is important

During the presentation, we saw live data from a number of sensors and cameras that were placed on the vehicle on four screens. We saw exactly where the vehicle was located, with an incredible 14 millimeters.

These systems can save many lives in the future. They are used in many situations, such as in confusing curves. If a vehicle crashes towards you from the opposite side, it can’t handle a turn, you have no way to know about it. However, if this vehicle were connected to the autonomous driving system, it would alert you to this, or your vehicle would automatically stop before the turn and avoid a collision.

We would find a large number of such and various other uses in the automotive industry, this was just one example for all. When will we see fully autonomous driving? Nobody knows at the moment, but it is estimated that we will be very close to it in about 10 years.
