The launch of the stable version of Android 12 is getting closer and that means that the new Material You design will be seen more and more. In the meantime, Google is already busy providing its own apps with this. Gmail is the next app to get a makeover.

Material You in Android 12

Android 12 features a completely new design called Material You. That design is an adapted version of the existing Material Design design language, and according to Google, it is all about the user. As a user, you can adjust the interface of Android 12 to the colors of the wallpaper you have set or choose colors yourself. The clock, widgets and quick settings, among other things, will adopt those colors. In this article you can read what you can expect from Material You.

App developers can already get started with this new look, but since the stable version of Android 12 is not yet out (and the APIs are not yet final), most will wait. The developer behind Sleep as Android has already started working with it and Google itself too. The contacts app, the Chrome browser and the camera app, among others, have been given a Material You appearance.

Gmail with Material You design

A Pixel 5 owner has received an update for his Gmail app with the new Material You look. XDA reports that. The Gmail app features light green tones and most likely the rest of the interface will also have the same color tones. In the editors, the new Gmail is not yet on the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4 XL. We are all running the latest beta of Android 12. So it looks like this feature will be rolled out via a server-side update. As soon as Google starts rolling out this feature for everyone, you will of course read that on Androidworld.

Availability Material You

Material You will work on select Android phones from the fall when the stable version of Android 12 is announced. We expect Google to update even more of its own apps and services with the new theme.
