This is the next Google product to be trashed

Google had a very good idea with Cardboard in 2014, but there was no mainstream interest in the open-source project.

Google is known for its search engine, innovative concepts and of course the unscrupulous burying of unsuccessful projects. The latest on that list is Google Cardboard. At least, the DIY gadget is no longer for sale through the Google Store. That does not alter the fact that the company still sees something in the technology.

Google Cardboard is no more

Google stops the sale of Cardboard cardboard glasses through its own web store, AndroidPolice spot. If you go to the US version of the product page, it says the search giant is no longer selling the product, but the project isn’t completely dead either.

We no longer sell the Google Cardboard in the Google Store. We will continue to help the community develop new experiences through the Cardboard open source project.

Said Google on the former product page

Google unveiled the Coardboard in 2014 as an innovative, inexpensive way to give anyone with a smartphone access to virtual reality. The simple design with cheap materials made it possible to bring VR into every household. The downside was that it was a rickety, limited VR experience.

The cardboard gadget was transformed into an open-source project in 2019 and it remains that way. You may not be able to buy the official Cardboard anymore, but there are plenty of alternatives. In fact, if you’re a little handy, you can DIY it yourself!

RIP Google Cardboard
2014-2021
