this is the corona passport and this is how you create your DCC

Holiday trips within the European Union should run smoothly this year due to the arrival of the EU Digital Corona Certificate (DCC). In addition, the DCC will serve as the certificate for test events. From 1 July you can request the DCC via CoronaCheck. We explain below how the app works and how to obtain such a DCC.

What is the Digital Corona Certificate?

In the past year, holidaymakers in Europe were partly responsible for the flare-up of the second corona wave in September. Many holidaymakers took the coronavirus with them on a trip in 2020 or took the virus back with them as a souvenir from their holiday trip. European countries want to do everything they can this year to prevent the outbreak of corona fires and to allow free travel in Europe for those who are not infected.

The Digital Corona Certificate is the outcome of this. Countries will ensure that the data from the national healthcare systems is used to set up a European travel certificate. Several countries are now having the app tested by their residents, including Belgium.

It will then become final in July: all countries will then support the DCC. With this you can in principle travel to other European countries without carrying all kinds of loose papers – the QR code of the DCC is sufficient. In the Netherlands, the Digital Corona Certificate can be loaded into the CoronaCheck app.

CoronaCheck for Android and iOS

Visitors to test events, including the Eurovision Song Contest in Rotterdam, were already confronted with the CoronaCheck app. Although it is not mandatory to show the Digital Corona Certificate in the CoronaCheck app – you can also download the DCC and show it on paper – the app for Android and iOS makes it easier to show the certificate. The Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport is currently finalizing the CoronaCheck app, so that the DCC can be applied for within the app. This should be possible from 1 July after an update of the app.

If you intend to travel or visit an event and you want to apply for a DCC, then one of the following situations must apply to you:

  • You must have a vaccination certificate: so you are vaccinated. Mind you, many countries require people to be fully vaccinated. You can apply for a DCC with one vaccine, but it is still possible that you will be refused at your destination;
  • Negative test evidence must be available: the body that performed the test must be affiliated with RIVM and provide the necessary papers to import the test into the CoronaCheck app. PCR tests can usually be taken up to 72 hours before your trip;
  • You have been tested positive for corona in the past: has the GGD or another agency reported a positive corona test and is this in the GGD’s systems? Then you can apply for a DCC on that basis. Please note that the infection may have occurred a maximum of 180 days ago.

How do I request my DCC in CoronaCheck?

As soon as the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport has updated the CoronaCheck app, it is possible to log in with your DigiD account. The app directly retrieves your vaccination data via your DigiD account. The app also checks whether you have come into contact with the coronavirus in the past – a maximum of 180 days ago. In the event of an old (registered) infection or vaccination, the app immediately creates the DCC.

Those who have not come into contact with the virus or who have not been (fully) vaccinated can offer test data in the app. This is not done via DigiD, but via the ‘collection code’ of the test from the GGD or the external test organisation. If you are traveling between 1 July and 31 August, you can request a free corona test. This can be done via travel organizations or via a government website that will be accessible from 1 July.

‘Travel only to yellow or green zones’

For the time being, the Digital Corona Certificate remains the only solution for a free and safe holiday abroad. It is of course important to check in advance what status has the country where you want to go on holiday. Many European countries are currently partly orange, including France – orange is given by RIVM to countries that pose a threat to your own health, and to the health of the Dutch upon return.

Countries that turn yellow or green, including Germany, are safe to visit according to the RIVM. Also note that you must always carry out a corona test from countries with orange or even red colors when you return to the Netherlands. Orange countries also require you to go into quarantine. This is even mandatory when returning from red countries.
