Take screen recording on your iPhone or iPad

The feature to take a screen recording comes in handy more often than you might think at first. With this function, for example, you can easily help a family member with a (difficult) problem on the iPhone or iPad.

Making a screen recording is also useful if you want to save a piece from a video from YouTube without fuss. And the beauty of it? Taking a screen shot is a snap.

Let’s check: record button in the Control Panel

The button to take a screen recording on your iPhone or iPad is located in the Control Center. You open the Control Center on an iPhone X (and later models) by swiping down from the top right corner of the screen. On an older device, you can see the panel by swiping up from the bottom edge of the screen.

If the record button is not in your Control Center, you need to add it first. Open the Settings app and tap the “Control Panel” option. Go to ‘More controls’ and tap the green plus sign next to the ‘Screen recording’ option. With the three stripes on the right you can change the order of the functions as you wish.

Step-by-step plan: make screen recording iPhone

To take a screen recording on your iPhone, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Control Panel;
  2. Tap the record button (this is the icon with the dot);
  3. After three seconds, the screen recording will start;
  4. When you’ve captured the screen shot, tap the red button at the top left;
  5. Choose ‘Stop’ to stop the screen recording;
  6. Your screen capture is saved in the Photos app.

If you also want to give your own comments with your screen recording, it is possible to switch on the microphone. The method is then slightly different:

  1. Open the Control Panel;
  2. Press and hold the record button;
  3. Turn on the microphone by tapping the microphone icon;
  4. Tap ‘Start recording’.

You can now take a video of your iPhone or iPad screen and tell what is happening on the screen.

Don’t forget: post-edit iPhone screen capture

The video you just shot is in the Photos app. We recommend that you update the video for a while. Often there is still a part of the Control Panel visible at the beginning of the video or you are still trying to go to the correct app.

Opening the video in the Photos app and tapping Edit will customize the screen recording. For example, you can crop the video or change the contrast here. And don’t you like the spoken commentary? Then you can remove the sound from your screen recording here.
