In WhatsApp there is a function to send voice messages to others, but what if you don’t have the time, or don’t have the opportunity to listen to them? You can convert your voice messages into text via a third-party app.

WhatsApp voice messages

Voice messages are a fun, alternative way to send a message in WhatsApp. However, it is not always convenient to receive such a message, for example when you are on a train and do not have earphones in your pocket. ‘Transcriber for WhatsApp’ is a new app that allows you to convert such audio messages into text.

Transcriber for WhatsApp uses Wit.ai services, which is a service that offers support for ten languages, including Dutch. To convert a voice message to text, all you have to do is share it with the app. After waiting a few seconds, the text will appear. Keep in mind that that way the message will be analyzed by a third party, and of course it will not be encrypted if you share it with Transcriber for WhatsApp.

That is how it works

We explain how you can use Transcriber for WhatsApp:

1. Long press a WhatsApp voice message
2. Press the menu with the three dots in the top right and choose To share
3. Tap on transcriber
4. Choose OK
5. Give the app permission
6. Press Close with the ad that appears
7. You will see the transcript

In our short test with the app, we see that she does have problems with the pronunciation of voice messages. If the sender of the message does not articulate well or does not speak general Dutch, the app can get into trouble. In English, Transcriber for WhatsApp gives a more reliable result. The app is also only available in early access.

WhatsApp is now also working on a function that allows you to convert voice messages into written language, but it is not clear whether it will also work with Dutch immediately.
