This is how it works with Android and iOS

If you have misplaced your smartphone at home, you can easily find it again if you call yourself. But what to do if the cell phone has been set to silent and does not vibrate either? There are also ways to let muted smartphones ring.

Both Android smartphones and iPhones have built-in options that make it easy to find silent devices.

How do I find my phone when it’s silent?

With Android, some precaution is necessary so as not to have to search for the device blindly. This is how a Google account should be set up. In addition, the mobile phone must still be switched on and connected to the Internet or a WLAN.

  1. If the requirements are met, you can go to the website provided by Google for lost devices at Android.com/find. This also works reliably on the PC.
  2. Make sure that you use the same Google account in the browser that is logged in on the missing smartphone.
  3. On the help page you select the smartphone you are looking for.
  4. Among other things, you can have the last location displayed. But if you have misplaced the cell phone somewhere at home, the ad will of course not bring you much. Therefore use the option “Let it ring“.
  5. The device gives the set ringtone for five minutes, even if it is actually switched to “mute”. Run through your apartment to locate the smartphone. Once you’ve found it, you can stop the ringing either using the power button on your smartphone or the option in your browser.

If you are technically well equipped in the household, there are other ways to track down your silent phone:

  • If the Alexa app is installed on the smartphone and an Amazon Echo speaker is nearby, speak the voice command “Alexa, where is my phone? “. Alexa goes on a search and lets the device ring.
  • This also works with a Google Home speaker.
  • If you have a smartwatch or a fitness bracelet and the accessories are connected to an app on the smartphone, many smart watches also have a function to call or vibrate smartphones.

If, contrary to expectations, the device cannot be found, you can lock it on the specified page and delete data remotely. Further measures for a lost cell phone:

Let the iPhone ring despite being “silent”

IPhone users can also have the iOS device ring nearby. In order to call the silent iPhone with sound, the iOS device must also be connected to the Internet / WiFi. In addition, an Apple ID must be set up, which you can access via another device.

  1. Register for this in the browser in the iCloud at. If you have connected several iOS devices with the same Apple ID, you can also call up the “Where is?” App there.
  2. Then select the iPhone you are looking for from the overview.
  3. You will find an option here with which you can play a sound.
  4. The iPhone will now ring for two minutes. The ringtone gets louder and louder.

Gadget friends also get a convenient way to find a mute iPhone with Apple devices:

  • You can do that on an “Apple Watch” control center and there via the blue icon give the ring command for the iPhone.
  • With Siri you can also set a timer. When the countdown is over, the iPhone will ring, even if the sound is actually switched off.

Maybe the device is not gone, but here:

Apple users can also take action here if the iPhone is not found. It can be switched to “lost” mode, for example to lock the device and leave a message on the display.
