It might be one of the coolest new features in the iOS update: making a photo detached. In iOS 16, it becomes much easier to crop a photo and make it freestanding. Unfortunately, this update will arrive on your iPhone at the end of this fall (sometime in mid-September 2022).

Still, you don’t have to wait to start using this iOS 16 feature right now. The Scan Thing app can already do it. Normally you need apps like Photoshop or Pixelmater to crop images. Especially with complex subjects it is very difficult to make a photo freestanding.
On an iPhone with iOS 16 it is a lot easier. You only have to press on the subject and it will automatically appear as a kind of sticker on your screen.
There is now a public beta of iOS 16 that anyone can install, but it still contains software errors. But if you still want to use this feature now, we have another solution for you.
Freestanding photos with the Scan Thing app
The ‘Scan Thing’ app already makes it possible. You tap the subject in this app and then the subject is made free-standing. In addition, the app also mimics the Live Text function. Allows you to copy text from a photo.
You don’t even have to take a picture on the spot. Scan Thing (like the iOS 16 feature) also works with photos you’ve taken before.
