these are the Huawei P50 and P50 Pro

Two new devices have been added to Huawei’s portfolio. The smartphone manufacturer presents the new Huawei P50 and P50 Pro. It’s all about the cameras again, but also about the design and HarmonyOS.

Huawei P50 series announced

It’s a busy day with announcements. We have only just recovered from the three Motorola Edge 20 devices that have been announced, Huawei comes with great news. It is the announcement of two new high-end smartphones; the Huawei P50 and the Huawei P50 Pro. Where in previous editions it was a smashing party with big events, it has now remained a small party in China. During that small party, the Huawei P50 series could be introduced.

Camera

As with the previous models such as the Huawei P30 Pro (which is still sold) and the Huawei P40 Pro, we also see a focus on the camera in the P50 series. That can hardly be missed with the two large modules that can be found on the back of the smartphone. We are working again with Leica. With the normal P50 and with the P50 Pro, this results in a 50 megapixel main camera, which is equipped with optical image stabilization. With the Pro model we see a 40 megapixel monochrome sensor, 13MP wide-angle lens and a 64 megapixel periscope telephoto lens with 3.5x optical zoom. With the Huawei P50 we see next to the 50MP main lens, another 12MP telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom and a 13 megapixel wide-angle lens.

Processor

Huawei may only purchase 4G chipsets from Qualcomm; and that results in two high-end devices with only 4G support. This concerns the Snapdragon 888 processor. Some of the devices come with this chipset, another part with its own Kirin 9000 chipset. Only a Snapdragon 888 processor is available with the P50. The Pro gets 8GB with 128/256/512GB of memory; with the 12GB RAM version there is 512GB storage. The P50 comes with 8GB of RAM with 128GB/256GB of memory.

Huawei gives the P50 a flat 6.5-inch OLED screen with a 90Hz refresh rate and a 4100 mAh battery. On the Pro model, we see a 6.6-inch OLED panel that is curved and offers a resolution of 2700 x 1225 pixels (120Hz). The battery capacity of the Pro model is 4360 mAh. Both can charge 66W wired and 50W wireless. There is an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance and there are stereo speakers.

availabilty

Both devices appear with HarmonyOS 2.0. According to the manufacturer, they will be released worldwide, but now only the details for China have been shared. The cheapest model of the Pro goes out for the equivalent of 780 euros; with the P50 we see a price tag of 590 euros. These are converted prices and are not representative of the world market for duties and the like. However, information about a European release has not yet been shared.
