These 9 Play Store Apps Steal Your Facebook Password

Google has removed 9 apps from the Play Store that secretly stole the user’s Facebook password. It was several apps that functioned fully. They only asked unsuspecting users to log into Facebook and remove ads, with a loophole.

Play Store malware

A new batch of apps have been detected trying to steal users’ Facebook passwords. It concerns 10 apps, nine of which were available in the Play Store. They went through the cracks of Google’s selection process, but have since been removed after Dr. Web, an internet security company, told Google about it. Although that didn’t happen before they were first installed about 5800 times.

The malware was hidden behind all kinds of different apps. From a horoscope, to an app locker, a fitness app and a photo editor. The apps were otherwise fully functional, and that of course serves as a cover. They even had very positive scores in certain cases.

Intercept password

Each of these apps worked with ads, and the apps promised to remove those ads every time users logged in through Facebook. If users chose this, they were shown the real Facebook login screen, only a script in the background ensured that the login data ended up on servers of the malicious parties.

If you have one of the above apps on your phone, it’s best to uninstall it as soon as possible. In addition, it is also wise to reset your Facebook password, even if you are not logged into such an application via the social networking site. Hopefully, Google will use this case to further streamline its Play Store review process so that deceptive apps are caught in time before they make it to the application store.
