iOS 14.5 was a massive mid-term iPhone update, but its successor is much more modest. These are the major new features in iOS 14.6.

You cannot download iOS 14.6 yet. We do not expect the new update until June. Thanks to developer test versions, we already know which new features are coming to the iPhone soon.

We may have gotten a little spoiled after all the new features in iOS 14.5 – such as the ability to unlock your iPhone with a face mask – but the successor is far less spectacular.

1. Losless Audio in Apple Music

Apple Music subscribers in particular are benefiting from iOS 14.6. From then on they can enjoy Lossless Audio. The name says it all: no quality is lost, so that music sounds better than ever before.

And best of all? It is free! That is quite unique, because with other music services you have to pay extra for the highest sound quality.

There is also bad news, because many people probably will not be able to enjoy the higher audio quality. Apple’s own AirPods and even the pricey AirPods Max headphones can’t handle Apple Music Losless Audio. You can read exactly how that works in the article below.

2. More privacy for the AirTag

When you find a lost AirTag, you can scan the tracker with your iPhone (or other smartphone) to find the owner’s phone number and contact you.

From iOS 14.6 you can also leave an email address. For example, you can choose whether the honest finder will see your telephone number, e-mail or both contact details when you have lost your wallet or bag (with AirTag), for example.

3. Apple Podcasts

Podcasts are the new thing in the audio world. After Spotify already fully committed to podcasts, Apple is now also tacking. From iOS 14.6 you can subscribe to Apple Podcasts and enjoy exclusive shows.

On the other hand, audio show creators can get paid for their contributions from then on. To attract as many subscribers as possible, Apple has already set up a registration program.

What is the release date of iOS 14.6?

During the Lossless Audio announcement, Apple said the higher audio quality would be available “mid-June”. The company also immediately betrays that iOS 14.6 will be released in that month.
