There are ever larger televisions in German living rooms – and there is no end in sight. Germans are also spending more and more money on impressive smart TVs, which is reflected in the sharp rise in the average sales price.

TV: Germans want bigger models

German customers are increasingly preferring larger televisions. A new consumer study comes to this conclusion. At the beginning of the millennium, televisions had an average diagonal of 32 inches, but the size has now grown from 42 inches to currently 55 inches. There is no end in sight to the trend reversal – on the contrary, people are already looking at televisions with one Diagonal of 65 inches and more.

Large smart TVs are of course also noticeable with a higher price. The Germans are generous here: In the third quarter of 2021, television sales of around 884 million euros were achieved in this country. The average price has risen from 588 euros in the third quarter of 2020 to 702 euros, which is a Jump of almost 20 percent corresponds to (source: gfu).

The turnover itself has barely increased noticeably lately, what about one significantly lower sales with televisions lies. The number of units fell by 16 percent in the third quarter of 2021. In the same quarter of the previous year, however, there was a real boom, which can be explained by corona lockdowns.

65-inch TVs increasingly popular

Recently, TVs with a diagonal of at least 65 inches are becoming more popular. Around one in five TVs recently sold was this size. Large smart TVs already account for almost 40 percent of sales. The average price in this area is up 9 percent now just under 1,300 euros gone up. Some televisions now even cost more than a house.
