The smart shopping cart of the future is here
The supermarket chain Edeka has presented a shopping trolley with intelligent functions. In addition to a 10-inch touchscreen, a goods scanner is also available. The high-tech shopping trolley is currently being tested in the first areas. Customers should be able to count on several advantages at the same time.
Smart Shopper: Edeka introduces new shopping trolley
With the Smart Shopper, Edeka is currently testing a new shopping trolley. This one is with one touch-sensitive 10-inch display equipped with a removable goods scanner. Customers use it to scan the items they want and then place them in the cart. Manual entry is also possible, since baked goods, for example, cannot be scanned. The customer sees a summary of their purchase and the amount to be paid on the display.
At the end of the shopping process, the shopping cart is taken to the checkout, where a barcode still needs to be scanned. The payment process then runs as usual at a conventional or self-service checkout. Goods do not need to be placed on the belt.
Should customers come up with the idea Place items in the Smart Shopper without scanning them firstthe system recognizes this via an integrated scale (source: Edeka).
Edek is currently testing the high-tech shopping trolley in several regions, partly also in Netto stores. The Smart Shopper is already ready for use in the Edeka regions Southwest, North, Rhine-Ruhr and Southern Bavaria. The shopping trolleys are manufactured by the two companies Pentland Firth and KBST.
