Duel of the giants! The shooters have been fighting for the players’ favor for almost 20 years
The two opponents could hardly be more different: On the one hand, Call of Duty: Vanguard, the one with one alternative world war scenario and on the other hand Battlefield 2042, which players on the Battlefields of the near future lets go. Fast action for in between meets chaotic mass battles. Each player has to decide for himself which is better. What sells better, however, cannot be denied, or in other words: Call of Duty will continue to dominate the international charts in 2021.
In the USA even twice. It is interesting that the latest CoD part is not at the top of the US annual balance sheet, but Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, which appeared in November 2020. Vanguard, on the other hand, secured second place among the best-selling games in 2021 and that after just one month of running. Rival Battlefield 2042 has to be content with 6th place.
The heart of every CoD: the multiplayer mode. In the trailer you can get a first impression of the multiplayer battles in Vanguard:
Battlefield is losing on all fronts
This is particularly bitter when you consider how much hype the DICE shooter was able to generate in advance. The reveal trailer sparked a real wave of excitement on social media in the summer. But after the beta at the latest it was clear: The game is a construction site.
And with the official release in November, it started quickly dissatisfaction in the net: Technical problems and too little content. The result was various memes and catastrophic user ratings on Steam and Metacritic. Vanguard did not get any top ratings either, but remained in a direct comparison spared from a shit storm and otherwise made no noteworthy blunders.
And outside of the USA, Battlefield 2042 could not prevail against Activision’s money printing machine. In Great Britain the decision was much tighter, but here too CoD dominated the charts in November (source: ukie.org.uk). German figures are still pending, but a similar result is likely to emerge in this country as well. CoD has always been a top seller in Germany in the past, with Black Ops Cold War selling more than 500,000 times.
