“The next fast charging station must be reachable in ten minutes”

In order to boost electromobility in Germany, 1,000 new fast charging locations with several charging points are to be built nationwide.

Federal Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer (CSU) gave the go-ahead for the new tendering program, which is to begin in September. The advertised fast charging system – also known as the “Germany network” – should become a game changer for more electric cars on German roads, the minister said. “The next fast charging station must be reachable in ten minutes,” said Scheuer as the goal.

The federal government is funding the program with around two billion euros. The national control center charging infrastructure takes over the coordination.

The planned fast charging points are intended to make driving an electric car more suitable for everyday use. With a minimum output of 200 kilowatts, they should enable electricity to be charged for several hundred kilometers.

Upper price limit of 44 cents

An upper price limit of 44 cents per kilowatt hour is set for each charging point. Driving with the electric car will not be more expensive than with the gasoline or diesel vehicle, explained Scheuer. A diesel price of 1.35 euros corresponds to a price of 45 cents per kilowatt hour for electricity at the charging point.

The tender, which starts on September 15, is aimed at regional operating companies and small and medium-sized companies. The bidders must submit potential locations within 900 so-called search areas, i.e. possible areas for charging points. Another call for tenders is to create around 200 charging locations in parking lots on federal motorways.

The Eon group has already announced that it will participate in various projects. At the same time, Eon called for additional public investments in the charging network and rapid implementation of the planned measures.

The President of the Association of the Automotive Industry, Hildegard Müller, emphasized the importance of a comprehensive fast charging network for the expansion of electromobility. The new tendering program set “the right goals and specifications,” said Müller on Monday. dpa
