The next evolution of the web

Every Monday morning we report on five things that are important to start the week. This time it’s about Web3, the new iMac, Rust and Apple’s App-Tracking-Transparency.

The fact that Donald Trump hardly plays a role in the media has anything to do with the fact that the controversial US president was voted out of office. The major social networks that Trump banned from their respective platforms after the storm on the Capitol had a much greater influence on this. A necessary step for many – but it also clearly shows the power the big platforms now have. If you want to be heard, you need Twitter and Facebook. Just like small retailers today can hardly get past Amazon and website operators can pack in without a reasonable Google ranking.

The Internet as such is actually structured in a decentralized manner. Anyone could run a web server or their own mail server. In reality, on the other hand, we usually communicate via centralized providers who put their proprietary technology over the free interfaces of the Internet. But the idea of a decentralized network is not dead yet. In fact, the idea has been making a comeback since the development of the blockchain. All over the world, people are working on decentralized concepts that could change the Internet forever. It remains to be seen whether these ideas will also arrive in the mainstream and form a counterweight to the powerful platforms. But if they do, it would be the beginning of the next evolution of the internet.

1. Web3 – the beginning of the end of the platform economy is decentralized

At t3n.de we investigate which factors have led to the fact that the Internet is now largely controlled by a few corporations. We also take a look at which technologies are currently being developed that could act as a counterweight to the prevailing platform economy in the long term – and thus pave the way for the Web3.

2. iMac 2021: Portable desktop with lots of color and lots of power

The new iMac brings color back into the office. Thanks to Apple’s in-house M1 chip, the all-in-one computer was also able to convince us with its inner values in the everyday test. But there are also points of criticism: The basic version only offers two USB-C ports, and the height of the screen cannot be adjusted. And since the RAM and hard disk cannot be expanded at a later date, you should think twice about which equipment variant you want to buy.

4. On the death of New Work forefather Frithjof Bergmann: The old man and the more

Frithjof Bergmann died on May 24th at the age of 91. The Austrian-American philosopher is considered to be the founder of the “New Work” concept. Two years ago we had the opportunity to talk to the thought leader about how work can really be rethought and why Bergmann had been dealing with this question since his first job at the automobile manufacturer GM.

5th practical tip of the week: Apple’s App Tracking Transparency – How brands should deal with first-party data now

With the introduction of iOS 14.5, Apple has issued much stricter data protection rules. Whenever you install an iPhone app, you will be asked if you want to consent to the tracking by the app provider. This is a challenge for brands, but one that can be mastered.
