the NASA app is a wealth of information
It has gone wrong and delayed a few times now, but the NASA launch of Artemis I to the moon should really go well. To get completely into the atmosphere, you can download the NASA app. We’re discussing it this week as App of the Week, because it’s brimming with information.
NASA
You could say that the NASA app might have too much information: it’s quite a wealth of knowledge that you get on your phone screen. You can look up information such as the company’s tweets, what projects it has underway, all the ins and outs about certain space phenomena, and videos about all things space. So much information, that it makes the app very educational, but not always in a very fun way.
Now NASA also has separate apps to entertain people more with space stuff, such as the selfie app we discussed earlier. But a little bit of that fun could have been integrated into this app. A little less dry, a little more learning by, for example, playing a game or being able to influence something by touching your phone screen. The app is now so stiff with information that is mainly given in images and text that you would almost think you are looking at some kind of teletext.
Very dry
Although that makes the app very fast and very clear, we would have liked to see a little more playfulness. NASA has all kinds of cool kids shows that it could have stolen some good game ideas from. Or, for example, quizzes or a way to put a funny filter over a photo, such as in the selfie app. Now it is a clear app, but almost everything has been said with it.
We are pleased with how open NASA is to sharing information, especially because it does not need anything in return. You don’t have to pay anything, you don’t have to create a profile: this makes the app extremely accessible. The font is also quite large, which makes the app accessible to an even larger audience. Very well done by NASA. The app also contains beautiful images of space, which makes it worthwhile to download this app anyway.
Short, but powerful, that is the explanation of this app, but that is because the app has also clearly been made as minimalist as possible to keep things clear and accessible. We would like it to be a bit more interactive, but otherwise NASA does a lot of good with this gigantic source of information.
