The largest floating solar system in North America goes into operation

The expansion of renewable energies is progressing worldwide. The largest floating solar system in North America has now started operation.

The energy transition is based on various pillars. In addition to wind turbines and the construction of hydroelectric power plants, solar energy continues to be essential. After all, there is hardly a more reliable source of energy.

In order for the expansion to continue, however, more space is required for the solar panels. In addition to the structure on land, bodies of water play an increasing role. In recent years, the US company built NJR Clean Energy Ventures meanwhile, the largest floating solar system in North America.

Floating solar system with 16,510 panels

The facility floats on New Jersey’s Canoe Brook Reservoir and spans nearly 70,000 square feet. The company installed a total of 16,510 solar panels for this purpose. That is enough to supply around 1,400 households with energy. The system floats on small rafts.

The advantage of a floating solar system lies in the increased efficiency. Because compared to systems on land, the water cools the underside of the panels and thus ensures a significantly higher energy yield. The technology therefore has great potential for further projects.

Solar farm delivers up to 8.9 megawatts

Robert Pohlman, Vice President of NJR, sees the advantage primarily in the use of unused space. Because both in the USA and worldwide, there are numerous reservoirs available that can be a potential location for further plants.

Until then, New Jersey can look forward to a yield of 8.9 megawatts. This is only a small step and by no means replaces a nuclear power plant. Despite this, the state is showing its efforts to create a more sustainable future.
