The free game will take you to communist Poland -apkrig
Just before the end of the year, an interesting free game was released, which could attract not only those who enjoy modern history. Martial Law comes from Poland and also takes us to communist Poland as a man who tries his best to take care of his daughter and make her happy despite his own situation and unhappy reality in 1981. Although the characters are fictional, quite possibly fragments of their story remind players of the former Eastern bloc.
It’s no coincidence that Martial Law came out shortly before Christmas, because it also tells the story of Christmas. But don’t expect an idyll, this is a rather depressing story.
In addition to entertainment, the title also offers an educational dimension and introduces players to the situation in Poland during totalitarianism and its specifics in a non-violent way. The fixer miniature team promises a visual novel that offers several endings in which situations do not have just one right solution.
It’s no coincidence that Martial Law came out shortly before Christmas, because it also tells the story of Christmas. But don’t expect an idyll, this is a relatively depressing story, which is accompanied by stylish pixelart graphics and melancholic music. Of course, from our point of view, it is part of the whole magic that the unhappy reality is a bit like our own recent history.
If you embark on a snowy adventure, a short, approximately half-hour, but touching story awaits you, which would deserve to be developed into a much more comprehensive form. And one cannot help but think how interesting a similar title could be in the context of former socialist Czechoslovakia.
The game was originally created during the GameJam Polskigamedev.PL 2021 event, before it developed into a publicly available title and is available completely free of charge for Windows, Mac, Linux, Xbox One and Xbox Series. So far, only 161 people have rated it on Steam, but 95 percent of them praise it. And I would join those voices.
