The famous VLC player celebrates 20 years

The non-profit company VideoLAN, which is behind the well-known video player VLC, is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the opening of its code to the public. This happened on February 1, 2001, when the director of Gourisse agreed to share the code of the entire VideoLAN project under the GNU GPL license.

In addition to the well-known VLC client (VideoLAN Client), the VideoLAN project also includes the VideoLAN Server, VideoLAN Bridge, VideoLAN Channel Switcher and also libraries for DVD decoding. All of these programs boast of their openness, free availability, absence of ads, spyware, and other deceptive tactics.

VLC has been downloaded to more than 3.5 billion devices

Today, this popular client is used by hundreds of millions of users. It is available on almost any platform you can think of: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android (TV and Auto), iOS and Apple TV, OS / 2 and BSD.

VLC has often been preferred for its audio, video and subtitle qualities and settings. It was also less demanding on system resources – that is, on the processor and RAM, and therefore it is also popular on devices with lower performance. The Linux community liked it precisely because of its openness principle, just as Linux is open and modifiable.

In addition, VideoLAN prides itself on creating the most popular x264 software encoder, DVBlast streaming program, and DVD and Blu-ray libraries.

Celebrations are coming up

VideoLAN is preparing several events for 2021, which will serve to celebrate the 20th anniversary of VideoLAN. Some will take place online, others offline. They also try to invite them to all those who have made a significant contribution to the development of the company and its software portfolio during that time. The company will send them a special package – we hope that there will be well-known cones in it, otherwise it will not be the same.
