Italian director and screenwriter Ruggero Deodato became famous for his controversial cannibal horror series, which spared no blood or sexual violence. But it was also the forerunner of found footage staged documentaries, which became popular many years later. In April, Fantastico Studio announced that Deodat’s cannibal trilogy would continue. But instead of cinema screens, they focus on computer screens and consoles.
The story dates back to the late 1990s and revolves around a videotape, which is said to contain an exclusive recording of how a tribe of cannibals eats alive.
The authors enticed us to an interactive horror adventure in the Unity engine, the script and direction of which will be taken care of by Ruggero Deodato himself. As he himself explained some time ago, he finds it increasingly difficult to make a film and believes that fans of the series will adopt this new form. Players have to control several different characters, through which we should learn more about the desperate expedition, which went to the virgin jungle in Borneo. The game was originally supposed to be released in November this year under the name Deodato’s Cannibal. She aimed at PC, PS4, Xbox One, Switch and mobile phones. However, this did not happen and now he makes himself known again.
Of course, the work was complicated by a pandemic, as in other cases, and remote communication between the developers and Deodat. The title was renamed Borneo: A Jungle Nightmare and will be released next summer. Although it no longer bears the name of a well-known director, Ruggero Deodato is still involved in it, according to the developers. It is also still true that this will be a completely new chapter of the cannibalistic saga according to the original scenario. The story dates back to the late 1990s and revolves around a videotape, which is said to contain an exclusive recording of how a tribe of cannibals eats alive. Your task is to get the material, because you specialize in similar scientists, but it has a catch. The recording is located in Borneo.
It is necessary to organize and finance the trip to this island. The question is whether you can trust your contacts and whether they happen to hide something from you. We have to reconstruct the events of the whole expedition. The authors entice us to the interesting environment and illustrations provided by Solo Macello. We will explore various locations in the United States and on the island and communicate with other people. But all this – and this must be emphasized – in the presentation of a two-dimensional interactive adventure.
Borneo: And Jungle Nightmare offers two different endings that you can reach depending on how much information you collect and what decisions you make. The authors also shared a new trailer on the occasion of the announcement of the new name, which unfortunately still does not reveal much about the game. However, mobile devices appear to have dropped out of the target platforms. Which, on the other hand, could mean that the game will be a little more generous in concept. It is also aimed at the next-gen console, although it is not clear whether in the native version or only in the framework of backward compatibility.
The film Cannibal (Cannibal Holocaust) premiered exactly 40 years ago, in 1980. It will definitely be interesting to see how Ruggero Deodato copes with the new medium, although it obviously does not lack enthusiasm for similar news. It is a pity that the game was not given to a larger team, but it can be an even bigger opportunity for Fantastico Studio. The video game should have the same atmosphere and themes as older films. So we’ll see.
Dario Argento is working on another horror game
It is an interesting coincidence that Borneo: A Jungle Nightmare, signed by Italian director Ruggero Deodato, is not the only similar upcoming game. Already last April we wrote that another Italian team Clod Studio is preparing a psychological horror. Dario Argento’s Dreadful Bond. And as its name suggests, it involves the famous Italian director, screenwriter and producer Dario Argento, who has a number of famous horror films to his credit. This is an even more ambitious act.
