According to Numbeo, the cost of living in Freiburg is 71.3 (New York City: 100.00). This puts the city in Breisgau in 108th place (as of June 23, 2023). In comparison: Berlin with a value of 71.5 in 103rd place, Munich in 73rd place with a price index of 75.1 and Cologne with a cost of living index of 69.3 in 134th place.

How high are the rents in Freiburg?

When it comes to the cost of living, Freiburg is the sixth most expensive city in Germany. In an international comparison, the city is 28.7 percent cheaper than New York City (without rent).

Taking into account the rental prices (Cost of Living Index Plus Rent Index), the city in Breisgau is even 48.6 percent cheaper than the US metropolis. In a national comparison, Freiburg ranks seventh in terms of cost of living plus rents – and is even behind Darmstadt.
