The cheapest Mac mini is more than enough
Apple has finally refreshed its line of Mac minis with a few surprises. So you can not only choose from a model with an M2 chip, but also one with an M2 Pro.
However, the biggest plot twist is that the price has gone down. While everything in the world is getting more expensive, the new Mac mini with M2 chip is 80 euros cheaper than the previous Mac mini with M1 chip.
If you are now in the market for a new desktop computer and you want to run macOS, which is highly recommended if you also use an iPhone, you have several options at Apple. You can choose from a Mac Pro, iMac, Mac Studio and a Mac mini.
A new Mac mini with M2 chip is available from 719 euros, making it the cheapest Mac desktop computer on the market. An iMac starts from 1569 euros, a Mac Studio from 2328.85 euros, and you can buy a Mac Pro from 6498.95 euros.
Mac mini 2023: small computer with a lot of power
That’s quite a difference in price, but that small, cheap Mac mini is more than enough for most people. These small computers are lightning fast, especially with the new M2 chips. Most users will mainly use the browser, want to edit some photos and perhaps play a game here and there. Then the Mac mini is perfect. You can even edit 4k videos with this device without the thing giving a sigh.
You should really see the Mac Studio and especially the Mac Pro as computers for the high-end user. Professionals who edit videos at huge resolutions all day long or otherwise need a lot of power.
The Mac mini is an ideal home computer, because it takes up little space, is quiet and can do a lot. Even if you work from home and spend all day at the computer, you probably won’t run into any limits with the Mac mini.
And all those extra options?
What you have to take into account is that the version of 719 euros is really a basic version with 8GB memory and 256GB storage. If you expand that, the price goes up considerably. Still, that upgrade isn’t as important as you might think.
The memory in a Mac mini is not the same as in a Windows PC. Since Apple uses its own chips, the M1 chip and M2 chip, the memory can be accessed much faster than usual. As a result, a Mac (mini) with 8GB memory will run smoothly for much longer than a PC or an old Mac with 8GB memory.
An upgrade to 16GB is worth considering if, like me, you have fifty tabs open at the end of the day, and you want to be sure that your Mac mini will last for many years to come.
In addition, you should not stare yourself blindly at the storage space. More storage space is nice, but because we work much more in the cloud these days, it is not always necessary. You can stream music, series and films and store a lot in iCloud for a small monthly fee. If you notice that you can’t make it, you can always purchase an external SSD. Then you are also cheaper than an Apple upgrade.
Don’t forget: Screen and keyboard
In addition, the Mac mini of course needs a screen, keyboard and mouse. If you don’t have anything at home and you want to get a full desktop computer, the iMac may still be the smarter option. Do you already have a screen, or do you want more flexibility in choosing a screen? Then the Mac mini is a top choice.
Mac mini 2023 buy
The Mac mini 2023 is therefore available in three versions. The entry-level model with M2 has 256GB of storage, the more extensive variant has twice as much capacity at its disposal: 512GB.
The Mac mini with M2 Pro has a minimum of 512 GB of storage. You pay 719 euros for the entry-level model, and 949 euros for the extended version. The M2 Pro version goes for 1569 euros over the counter. It has been officially in stores since January 24.
