 "

The market for electric scooters is booming. Democratized in big cities, they have become one of the favorite means of travel for the French. In Paris, a rental service called “Lime” provides electric scooters throughout the city, in the manner of Velib.

Lime scooters, precisely, are models made in Segway, the Ninebot ES1. Ninebot, bought Segway, and Xiaomi is investing heavily in Ninebot. The excellent value for money is at the heart of the brand’s strategy.

With the Ninebot ES2, the manufacturer has made many improvements over the first model. The company worked particularly hard on safety including a less abrupt engine braking system and a complete set of lights to be clearly visible at night.

We were lucky enough to be able to test the Ninebot ES2 Segway for several days . Discover all our impressions.

Design and finishes

Right out of the box, the Ninebot ES2 Segway seems massive . After careful consideration, it is indeed a beautiful baby of 12.5 kg. Suffice to say that wearing under the arm on public transport will not be easy. Large and long, the scooter has the advantage of providing comfort not insignificant for large users. I measure 1.85m and I have plenty of room on the board to put my feet up. The handlebar is at the perfect height.

A lighthouse is placed at the front to be visible at night

Segway seems to have bet a lot about security. The black scooter, particularly elegant, is equipped with multiple warning lights. At the front, a small lighthouse is activated by briefly pressing the start button. At the rear, a reflector partly covers the brake. On the front of the tray are two other reflectors. The icing on the cake: two light signals, located at the rear of the tray, flash as soon as one brakes.

The wheels are equipped with mudguards, the handlebar grips are very comfortable. The system to fold the scooter to carry is very simple. The crutch, located under the tray, is so discreet that I almost did not see it.

The folding system is very simple: the pedal is pressed forward
The gallows are folded on the rear wheel
That’s it!

On the other hand, I could not miss the huge light coming from below the plateau. One can customize its color via the companion application (I will come back to it). It allows to be permanently visible, in addition to the lighthouse.

 "
With the lights under the plateau, impossible not to be seen at night. In addition it is stylish!

The small round screen located on the handlebar is quite basic. It displays the real-time speed, the selected driving mode and the battery indicator. A simple press on / off button activates the headlight. A double pressure makes it possible to switch to another mode of driving.

Overall, the design is very successful. The Ninebot ES2 is stylish, sturdy (I tried a few jumps on the sidewalks and she did not flinch) and Segway worked particularly hard on safety. And at night she throws it!

Speed, handling and safety

Segway announces a maximum speed of 25 km / h for a user weighing 70kg. I weigh 82kg. Unsurprisingly, I have never reached 25 km / h. At maximum, I was able to drive at 21 km / h on the flat. The 300 W motor built into the front wheel quickly showed its weaknesses. On a false dish or on a climb, the Ninebot ES2 is sorely lacking in juice. I often had to give a few foot strokes to propel the scooter in the climbs. I felt this weak acceleration from the first start. The first impulse is progressive, without any start. We lose in sensations, we gain in safety.

"

Segway has also made a point of honor to secure the maximum of its scooter at the driving level. Braking is also progressive The brand seems to have listened to the criticism of users of the Ninebot ES1, many to be passed over the handlebars. Thanks to its engine brake, the stops are soft. But we must anticipate more. For emergency braking or downhill, I strongly recommend using the conventional method of rear brake. Otherwise, it is the fall assured

"
The brake control on the handlebar is reactive but it is better to go through the rear brake.

One great strengths of the Ninebot ES2 is its ability to ride on all terrains. Its wheels are solid so solid, and do not swell. No puncture possible. The handling is excellent. I did my first test in rainy weather, taking tight curves at full speed. Never did the scooter make me afraid.

The two dampers make it possible to ride on winding roads. So I ventured on lawns, sandy paths strewn with pebbles, at no time did the Ninebot ES2 make me fake good.

The Ninebot ES2 Segway is supposed to travel 25 km with a single charge for a user weighing 70 kg (5200 mAh battery). In fact, it’s a lot more complicated. Everything depends on several criteria. The weight of the user first. My 82 kg (the scooter supports up to 100 kg) have necessarily had an impact on autonomy. As I explained above, my weight forced me to put the gases (sport mode) and thus consume more energy.

"
Rare failure of this scooter: the charger cover is removed very quickly. Dangerous on rainy days.

The courses are also to be taken into account. If you spend your day riding uphill, the battery will run out faster. The regenerative brake system promises to recharge the battery during deceleration phases. Three modes of recovery are available, more or less powerful (we have set this mode to “medium”). In fact, it is difficult to see the gain brought by this system.

I used the scooter in winter (which means it’s dark in the morning and evening) during house-office trips. It is therefore necessary to turn on all the lights to limit the risks. The battery takes a hit.

I traveled the streets of Amiens (city with many climbs), mainly at night, and I weigh 82 kg. I was able to move with a complete recharge over 15 to 20km according to my course. An autonomy quite suitable therefore, close to that of the Xiaomi M365 . Note that it is possible to connect a second battery (not included, count 150 euros) in a wink on the gallows.

The charging system allows to pass from 0 to 100% in just over 3 hours . In 1h30, it is already possible to spend a day with the scooter, provided to be satisfied with home-office trips and a few appointments. It is therefore advisable to charge the Ninebot Segway ES2 overnight.

The application

In order to use the Ninebot ES2, an application is required. It is an integral part of the user experience. It is through the app that the user configures his preferences.

 "

Called Segway-Ninebot, it allows to synchronize the scooter with a smartphone and access a lot of information: average speed, number of kilometers traveled, battery status, number of kilometers remaining, etc. The app (which can be blocked by password access) also serves as a lock. With a simple gesture it is possible to block the wheels and therefore the operation of the scooter. Perfect when you have a fast race.

 "

Via the application, one can also customize the color of the light under the tray . You can also choose to have the rear lights always on. The app allows to configure the maximum speed in “limited mode”: once this mode is activated, the scooter does not exceed the speed indicated in the app. You can also set the “cruise mode” and the energy recovery level. Finally, the Segway-Ninebot application allows to update the scooter. Simple and complete, using it is child’s play.

In everyday life

After a week of use, the Ninebot ES2 Segway has proven to be a good way to get around everyday. Elegant, solid, she is especially very reassuring. Except downhill, where I could have some fright during the first two days. The engine brake is too weak to handle fast descents. The foot brake on the back is much more effective. A little time of adaptation is necessary for this to become a reflex.

The autonomy is not extraordinary for the big jigs, but remains rather good. Lightweights should find their account. I have the same reservations about speed and acceleration. If the weight of the user is greater than 70kg and journeys are not made on flat, the performance is below that announced by the brand. No offense, I drove an average of 20km / h on trips with a lot of fake dishes and some slopes. And I weigh 82kg. I gave the scooter to a woman about 55 kg (we do not ask a woman for that kind of thing), she managed to reach 26 km / h.

The price of the Ninebot ES2 Segway will probably convince you. Between 350 and 499 euros according to the distributors and promotions, it is a price more than interesting with regard to the experience with the daily newspaper.
