The best apps to make a gif with your iPhone

Sending a gif on your iPhone can be done in many ways. In the list below, we discuss two apps that you can use to turn your photos into gifs. In addition, we take a look at two popular messaging app with built-in gif function, so making gif from photos becomes very easy.

1. Giphy

Giphy is your best friend when it comes to creating iPhone gifs. With this overarching gif app you can not only create animations yourself, but also discover the creations of others.

Making a poison is very simple. Simply record a movie, or select an existing movie. Then you can spice up the gif with stickers and face filters. After the video is on you can of course easily share it with family and friends via all social media apps.

You can also follow other gif makers through Giphy by ‘subscribing’ to their channel. Incidentally, the app was taken over by Facebook in 2020 and that does not suit everyone. If you prefer to deal with the social medium as little as possible, it is better to ignore Giphy.

2. Momento

Momento is a good alternative iOS gif making app. The app has a nice design and is largely free to use. This app also supports Live Photos, so you can make a moving animation of every photo. You can then save this gif file in your camera roll.

While editing, you can add frames to your gif, or add stickers and text. There are also simple options to edit the photo, so that it looks just a bit nicer. These editing options go a little further than Giphy Cam, but there are a lot less fun animated stickers and effects in Momento.

Momento is free to use, but it also has in-app purchases to unlock all features. For example, in the free version there is a watermark of the app in the lower left corner of your creation.

3. Telegram Messenger

Do you happen to already use Telegram Messenger to keep in touch with your friends and family members? Then you don’t even need the above apps. Telegram has a handy built-in function for converting a video into a gif. All you have to do is the following.

  1. Open a conversation in Telegram;
  2. Tap the paperclip icon and select a video;
  3. Mute the sound in the top left corner of the screen;
  4. Select the part of the video you want to turn into a gif;

A GIF will now be automatically created from your video. Unfortunately Telegram does not support Live Photos. You have to use one of the above apps for that.

4. WhatsApp

While Telegram’s gif feature is better, most of the people can be found in WhatsApp more often. This app also has a built-in GIF function, which works in a similar way.

  1. Open a WhatsApp conversation;
  2. Tap the plus sign to send an attachment;
  3. Choose Photo and Video Library;
  4. Choose a video that you want to turn into a gif;
  5. Now make the video short enough until a gif button appears in the top corner of the screen;
  6. Tap ‘gif’ to create a gif that you can send right away in WhatsApp.

The disadvantage of the WhatsApp gif function is that they last a lot shorter than Telegram’s. That makes it more difficult to cut the right moment from a video.

You can also create a new GIF via WhatsApp. For this you simply record a video that lasts a maximum of six seconds. Then tap gif at the top right of the screen.
