In the trendy big city, life without it is almost unthinkable: the thermo mug. As a “coffee mug to go”, it is the more environmentally friendly alternative to disposable cups when used frequently, keeps the drink hot (or cold) and, last but not least, can make a visual statement, an accessory. GIGA looked around for bestsellers and test winners.

Many cafes, at least many environmentally conscious and / or hip, fill the coffee to go in their own thermal mugs. Sometimes you even pay less if you do without the coated paper cup with plastic lid. So: don’t forget to pack the thermo mug to go!

Thermo mug to go: What is a “tumbler”?

In English, thermal mugs are often referred to as “tumblers” – but also drinking glasses for water or whiskey, usually with a thick base. In Europe, the term could cause irritation: The Swiss understand “tumbler” to mean their clothes dryer.

The high level of customer satisfaction and the attractive price make it a hit. The sizes 0.36 liters and 0.5 liters are each available in different colors.

Thermo mug test winner at Stiftung Warentest: Braun Thermal Mug

Stiftung Warentest has for Issue 4/2020 Thermo mug tested. The winner was the Braun Thermal Mug. According to the testers, the outstanding feature is the very good insulation, the cup keeps drinks warm for a long time. But the model with a capacity of 0.33 milliliters also impresses with its tightness and handling.

A design piece: Stelton to Go thermo mug

Simple elegance, that is the Stelton to Go thermo mug. The manufacturer emphasizes the click function on the lid, so you can open the cup with one hand. However, this disqualifies himself from being transported in a fully packed bag. No, such a design vessel, it belongs in the hand! But: According to user comments, it is not satisfactorily dishwasher-safe and the Stiftung Warentest is not convinced either. In addition to 0.2 liters, there is a size with 0.34 and 0.4 liter capacity.

The smart ones: lens cups for coffee & co

There is a whole range of smart thermo mugs. Quality and good insulation play a secondary role for them, no, this is about the appearance – but different from the design mug mentioned above. The thermo mugs shown here, which look like the lens of a single-lens reflex camera, offer a special surprise effect. But if you want to give away such a mug, you should be careful: a Nikon photographer doesn’t want a Canon cup, a Canon photographer doesn’t want to sip from Nikon.
