No time right now?

Tesla remains clearly in the lead in the CAM ranking of the most innovative manufacturers of electric cars. VW is not far away, but BMW and Daimler are only in the middle.

When it comes to all-electric cars, Tesla is by far the most innovative automobile manufacturer in the world. For the current edition of its ranking, the Center of Automotive Management (CAM) has calculated the innovative strength of 32 automakers on the basis of 291 innovations in the field of electromobility. Innovations in the areas of range, consumption and charging power are incorporated into the calculations – with a view to improving customer benefits. Tesla, for example, scored particularly well in terms of range and charging performance.

E-innovations: VW in second place thanks to ID 3

According to the CAM innovation ranking, Tesla was able to gain 45 index points compared to the previous year and comes to 159 index points in terms of electric car innovation. VW in second place – with an increase from 37 to 123 index points. VW benefited from the high segment ranges and charging capacities of the VW ID 3. In addition, further innovations from Porsche (Taycan) and Audi (E-Tron) were positively included in the evaluation. The Chinese manufacturer BYD jumped to third place with 23 plus points (70 index points). According to CAM, the innovations at BYD Han EV were responsible for this.

In addition to VW and BYD, Hyundai is one of the so-called fast followers of the top innovator Tesla. There are four Chinese car manufacturers in the top ten (BYD, Geely, BAIC and SAIC); Meanwhile, Daimler and BMW have to be content with places eleven and thirteenth. “The established automobile manufacturers have to arm themselves, as considerable innovation dynamics can be expected not only from Tesla, but also from newcomers in electromobility such as Lucid Motors or the Chinese manufacturers Nio and Xpeng,” says CAM study leader Stefan Bratzel. If you come too late with e-mobility, you run a high risk, warned Bratzel.
