Talk: Amazon stops hosting controversial social network

Amazon announces that it will stop hosting the social network Parler on AWS (Amazon Web Services). This means that the platform will be completely inaccessible… unless it finds another host. But it will be complicated given the situation after the intrusion of the Washington Capitol.

Amazon no longer hosts Talk on Amazon Web Services (AWS)

In a letter to Parler, Amazon Explain to have “Recently observed a persistent increase in violent content”. The group goes on to say that “Given the unfortunate events that have occurred this week in Washington, there is a serious risk that this type of content will further incite violence”.

Talking can more or less be presented as an alternative social network to Twitter and Facebook. Its desire is to leave freedom to users, hence its name. It turns out that the platform is controversial given the messages circulating. There are a lot of pro-Trump supporters on the app and some are using it to coordinate actions, including that of the Capitol Trespassing. Some also want other similar acts at Apple, Google or Amazon. The first two have withdrawn the application from the App Store and Play Store this weekend.

Amazon will close Talking’s AWS account tomorrow morning. For his part, John Matz, the founder of the social network, confirmed in a message on the platform that there may be disruptions for several days. “We will do everything to find a new supplier quickly,” he said.

What accommodation alternative for Parler?

What are the other possible hosts? Since Parler chose Amazon Web Services in the first place, we can estimate that there are a lot of users and therefore servers that follow behind are needed. Therefore, the alternative solutions are Google Cloud or Microsoft Azure. But given the situation in the United States, it is unlikely that Google or Microsoft will agree to host Speak.

Besides the Parler case, there is the case of Donald Trump. Twitter banned the US president’s account yesterday. The social network says it did “Because of the risk of further incitement to violence”.
