Switch: a price drop is not planned, Nintendo announces
Nintendo announces that it has no plans to lower the price of the Switch, at least until April 2024. This does not mean that there will necessarily be a drop next year.
Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa mentioned the subject during a series of questions and answers with the group’s investors. “Currently, there are no plans to lower the price of our equipment during the current fiscal year”did he declare. “On the other hand, although we do not intend to raise prices, the yen continues to be weak and supply costs remain high, so we will continue to monitor the situation closely”he added.
Nintendo’s president acknowledged that prices for some components have come down, but it will take time for that to trickle down to manufacturing costs, and that overall manufacturing costs for the Switch “remain high”.
The recent financial report, however, saw Switch sales plummet for the second year in a row. History should repeat itself during the current fiscal year. Shuntaro Furukawa, however, noted some positive things that could help, such as the success of the film Super Mario Bros. and the exit of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
“In the history of our video game platform business, we have never anticipated sales of 15 million hardware units and 180 million game units in the seventh year of a system, and we therefore consider that we have entered uncharted territory”continued Shuntaro Furukawa.
