Surf the 5G network at no extra charge
o2 is giving its mobile customers the upgrade to 5G reception. Several tariffs have been changed for this purpose, and new customers will automatically have access to the 5G network. Anyone who already uses one of the affected tariffs from O2 can simply upgrade – and do not pay for it.
Upgrade from o2: more tariffs get 5G
Changes are pending at o2, from which existing customers in particular benefit. Because the mobile operator is expanding its range of 5G tariffs. All tariffs from the o2 Free Unlimited series are activated for the faster mobile communications standard. In volume tariffs, 5G is now available from o2 Free M upwards.
This affects the tariffs o2 Free Unlimited Max, o2 Free Unlimited Smart and o2 Free Unlimited Basic (see o2). With the latter, however, the upgrade is not noted on the o2 website, the reduced maximum speed of 2 Mbit / s also makes 5G practically superfluous outside of the included high-speed trial month. With the volume tariffs, the cell phone tariffs o2 Free M (see at o2) and o2 Free M Boost (see at o2) benefit from 5G access (source: Telefónica / o2).
According to o2, these volume tariffs are among their most successful products. Now that will Value for money again upgraded. The maximum download speed should increase to 300 Mbit / s at no extra charge. On average, however, there are only 56.2 Mbit / s in the 4G network, and even less at some 5G locations.

If you still want to upgrade your contract to 5G, you can do so via the app or on the o2 website in your own customer account Book a free “5G access” package. As of today, the new conditions apply to new customers, the corresponding tariffs are already shown online with “4G LTE / 5G”.
If you are thinking about a 5G upgrade for your volume tariff, you should keep one thing in mind: With higher data speeds, that is also potentially Data volume used up faster. Despite the 5G upgrade, the speed is throttled after exceeding your high-speed data volume, according to o2 to a maximum of 32 kbit / s. You should also make sure that 5G is available in your area and that you use a 5G-enabled device.
