Many people are currently coming into contact with a gas bottle and gas cartridge for the first time in their lives. They stock up on a gas grill or camp stove to be prepared in the event of a blackout. But there are rules about how and where you can store gas bottles and gas cartridges.

Store gas bottles and gas cartridges safely

If, like many other people, you have bought a small gas stove with cartridges or a camping stove for large gas bottles, then you must also have a place to store them. And that is not so easy, as a closer look shows. Gas cookers are often sold with eight or more gas cartridges (see Amazon). You are not allowed to have that many in your apartment or house. There are regulations for this in Germany.

Store gas cartridges

  • Do not store you are allowed to put the gas cartridges below ground level, for example in the basement, in the bedroom, stairwell, hallway, passage or a passage of buildings.
  • may store you a maximum of two gas cartridges per apartment. These must not be in the same room. The limit applies to full and empty gas cartridges. It is also important that the gas cartridges are stored upright. You must protect the cartridges from damage and heat. In addition, the room should be well ventilated in case of leaks. A cool and dark storage location is recommended.
  • Store individually outside is possible, but access by third parties must be prevented. So you can’t just put them in your garden. You also have to protect them from high temperatures, for example from the sun.

Misconduct can result in deflagration and explosions. It is therefore important that you pay attention to the correct storage of the gas cartridges.

Store gas cylinders

  • Do not store are you allowed to store gas bottles below ground level. The same rules apply here as for gas cartridges.
  • may store maximum of two gas cylinders of the same size in the apartment or house. There is also a garden shed. One of them must be in use, the other may stand as a substitute in another room.
  • Store outside is possible under a canopy without any problems or restrictions. It is recommended to only store the number of gas cylinders that you really need. In addition, you must protect them from unauthorized access. Full and empty gas cylinders should be stored separately.

Don’t overdo it with the gas supply

Even if many people are afraid of a blackout in Germany, you should not overdo it with a supply of gas bottles or gas cartridges. Improper storage can put you and others at risk and do more harm than good.
