Listen to offline Spotify on an Apple Watch

We had to wait a long time for it, but Spotify has finally responded to our wishes. Apple Watch wearers can now listen to Spotify offline by downloading albums, songs and podcasts. That is very simple:

  1. Grab your iPhone and open the Spotify app;
  2. Go to the album, song or podcast you want to listen to offline on the Apple Watch;
  3. Tap the three dots to the left of the play button;
  4. Choose “Download to Apple Watch”

Your chosen music will now be transferred to your Apple Watch. Once the song, podcast, or playlist is available offline, you’ll see a green check mark next to the title. From then on you can listen to it without needing an internet connection.

The new function is ideal for sports, for example. You no longer have to bring your iPhone to listen to music. The audio is on your Apple watch, so you can omit the phone.

You can only listen to Spotify offline when you are a Premium member. Do you listen to the music service for free and do you hear advertisements in between? Then the position will pass you by.

The conditions

The new function is gradually rolling out. In other words, don’t you see the download button in your Spotify iPhone app yet? Then you have not yet received the update and there is nothing else to do but wait.

You need at least an Apple Watch Series 3 (from 2017) to listen to Spotify offline. WatchOS 6 is also a requirement, although Spotify recommends running at least watchOS version 7.1. Don’t forget to update the Spotify iPhone app.

Apple Watch becomes more independent

Little by little, the Apple Watch is becoming more independent. The fact that you can now listen to music offline without an iPhone nearby is a perfect example of this.

Let’s hope Apple pays more attention to this in the coming period. For example, anyone who wants to use WhatsApp on the Apple Watch now has to squeeze through all kinds of hoops and curves. Curious? In the article below we explain how this works.
