Special AirDrop feature in China
Last month it was announced that Apple is releasing a special AirDrop feature in China. With the new update, AirDrop gets the feature to share files with anyone for just 10 minutes. This is in contrast to the current AirDrop function, where you can leave AirDrop on ‘Everyone’ indefinitely.
Apple probably modified this feature because AirDrop was used in China to forward posters and images against President Xi JinPing and the Chinese government. The Chinese government has requested Apple to adjust the function and the company has now done so.
AirDrop feature coming to everyone with iOS 16.2
Earlier we wrote that the AirDrop function should come to all Apple devices in our opinion, because how often do you forget to turn off AirDrop on your iPhone? That wish is now becoming reality, because Apple is releasing the new AirDrop function for everyone with iOS 16.2.
The new feature is especially useful for preventing unwanted photos via AirDrop. In principle, anyone with an Apple device can AirDrop photos to each other, as long as you have the ‘Everyone’ feature turned on. It often happens that you forget to turn off the function, so Apple has come up with something for that.
New feature replaces ‘Everyone’ feature
The new AirDrop feature in iOS 16.2 to share files with anyone for just 10 minutes replaces the old feature. With the old function it was possible to share and receive files with anyone for an unlimited period of time. There is now a time limit, so you have to turn the function on again after 10 minutes.
The other two AirDrop functions, with which you do not receive files or only receive files from contacts, remain unchanged. Here it remains possible to keep the function switched on indefinitely.
Not yet the final version of iOS 16.2
This is not yet the final version of iOS 16.2, so it is hoped that Apple will also bring the old feature back in the final version. The 10 minute function is a good addition, but as far as we are concerned, it can exist alongside the old setting. AirDrop would then have the following features:
- Received from;
- contacts only;
- Everybody;
- Everyone for 10 minutes.
