Sony Xperia 1 III only gets one Android OS update

Updates are increasingly important for the various devices today. The security updates in particular are important in this respect, where vulnerabilities can be solved. Sony has now informed DroidApp about the update policy for the Xperia 1 III, which is not good news.

Android 12 only for Xperia 1 III

The new generation of smartphones from Sony are gradually coming to the shops. This year Sony hopes to score with the Xperia 5 III, the Xperia 10 III and its latest flagship; the Xperia 1 III. This smartphone will soon be released on the Dutch market. Equipped with an advanced camera, beautiful screen and good specifications, the Sony Xperia 1 III can keep up with the competition.

DroidApp was curious about the update plans for the Sony Xperia 1 III and we have therefore asked Sony Benelux for a response. Sony informs us that the device will be updated for two years with a monthly security update, which also fixes bugs. It is expected that the device will receive one Android update. So this will be the update to Android 12. The response to us is as follows;

Regarding updates: 2 years -> this usually means 1 Android update and a monthly security / bug fix update. If necessary, we can still release a bug / security update after 2 years, but this is only if really necessary.

We double checked whether it is true that the Sony Xperia 1 III can only expect one Android OS update. This is due to the fact that almost every other manufacturer releases at least two (and some even three, such as OnePlus and Samsung) Android updates. The message that the Xperia 1 III will only receive one Android OS update is hereby confirmed once again.

That’s definitely not good news for those eyeing the Xperia 1 III. Certainly not considering the price of the device; 1299 euros. In addition, the period of two years of security updates is now outdated. Samsung gives devices four years of security updates, OnePlus 3 or 4 years depending on the model series. As far as we’re concerned, Sony is seriously wrong with this, and we hope that Sony will repent here. Considering the Xperia 1 III’s pricing, the Xperia 10 III and Xperia 5 III’s update policy won’t be much better.
