Sony unveils WF-1000XM5 earbuds with ‘best noise canceling in the world’
Sony now officially announces its new premium earbuds WF-1000XM5. The in-ears are equipped with the ‘best noise canceling’ (according to measurement standard Jeita) and can last 8 hours on a single charge.

With the case you can provide the earbuds with new energy twice, so that you can listen for 24 hours with noise canceling on. It’s 36 hours with noise canceling off. You can listen for an hour in 3 minutes, but if you want to fully charge it, you will soon be 1.5 to 2 hours further. You can also charge them wirelessly with Qi technology.
There are three microphones on each earbud, including two feedback microphones that improve low-frequency noise cancellation. There are now also two processors per earbud, which together divide the work to improve the noise cancelling. It is the Integrated Processor V2 combined with the HD Noise Canceling Processor QN2e, to be precise. They ensure that the total of six microphones provide improved sound performance and noise cancelling.
The design has also changed considerably compared to its predecessor WF-1000XM4: a more modern, sloping appearance and 25 percent smaller and 20 percent lighter. What is particularly striking is that the case has a more attractive, subtle design. The black box looks more like a make-up box than the somewhat bulky, large appearance of the predecessor. The earbud tips are made of polyurethane foam that reduces high frequency range and is comfortable, with the option of adding an SS tip for those with small ears.
Better sound on calls
Sony has also indicated that for these earbuds it has focused on improving the sound during calls. If you’re in an online meeting or making a phone call, you can now be heard better, partly because the noise canceling cancels out all other noise, including the wind. Very handy if you’re cycling to the office in a hurry and a meeting has already started: you can simply make your call on your bike. Even when it rains, by the way, because the caps are water resistant with their IPX4 rating.

A special algorithm has been developed that allows AI, in combination with bone conduction sensors, to learn that you are talking and also learn which voice is yours when you talk, so that your voice can be amplified in a noisy environment. Speak-to-chat is also present on these new earbuds, as is Multipoint Connection, which allows you to connect to the buds with two devices at the same time.
Sony launches the earplugs with the figurehead of RnB singer Miguel and the new slogan ‘For The Music’. So: not just for calls. Listening to music is also improved, because the drivers are no longer 6 mm, but more than 8 mm. As a result, the earplugs are not extremely small, but there is more space to create the audio experience. With the accompanying app you can also set an equalizer to your taste. A little more bass, for example, or clear vocals.
LDAC and DSEE Extreme are present to enhance digital music that has been compressed in real time and 360 Reality Audio is present, giving you the feeling that the artist is singing in your head, so to speak. Head tracking is also possible thanks to the gyroscope in the earbuds, where the sound really seems to come from your phone, and when you turn away from the earbud furthest from your phone, no sound can be heard.

The WF-1000XM5 is available in black and silver from August 2023 and costs 320 euros.
