Sony partners with Chinese smartphone manufacturer

Sony has announced its partnership with Chinese smartphone brand Meizu. With the Meizu services on Sony phones, the brand wants to expand its market share in China. Although it is possible that the cooperation will be expanded in the long term.

Sony and Meizu

Sony joins forces in China with Meizu. That is a local smartphone products that is not active in Europe. Sony announces the new on its Chinese website. The intention is to give Chinese users the choice to download Meizu apps on their Sony phone.

An important app is the Flyme application store. In China, the Google Play Store is not active on Android devices, which is why Chinese brands’ own application stores are a very popular alternative. But in addition, users will also be able to download other Meizu apps for news, weather and email, among other things.

The choice of Meizu as a strategic partner is remarkable, because the Chinese brand has seen its market share shrink at a rapid rate over the past six years and it is now less than 1 percent, according to figures from Counterpoint. Sony itself is also a small player in China, but with better developed services it hopes to get more money from the enormous market. The link with Meizu seems logical because the Chinese brand, unlike for example Xiaomi or OPPO, is not a competitor in the other markets where Sony is active.

Event on October 25

In its press release, Sony said the two companies would like to explore their partnership even further in the future. Sony recently announced that it will announce a new device on October 26. That event will take place at 5:00 AM CST, which is the Beijing time zone. It is quite possible that the new product is also aimed at the Chinese market, but whether that is the case remains to be seen.
