Sony is going to make a Gran Turismo movie

Gran Turismo is successful as a game and that is why Sony is now also going to make a movie of it. Read here when you can expect the Gran Turismo movie.

The storyline is about a gamer – not unexpectedly – who becomes a professional racing driver. The film is expected in August next year. South African director Neill Blomkamp will direct the Gran Turismo film for Columbia Pictures.

The Deadline website first broke the news about a possible GT film in May, but on Tuesday Sony announced a release date for the film: August 11, 2023. So we have to be patient. We have experienced it before that a game is made into a movie, that does not always have a good result. While Blomkamp is no stranger to horror, the GT movie is unlikely to feature an army of zombies.

Instead, the plot centers on a teenage GT gamer whose skills take him through a series of competitions to become a professional driver. That really suits the game. This is because from 2008 to 2016 Nissan Playstation GT Academy program did just that, finding promising talent using the Playstation racing game.

GT Academy

Gran Turismo focuses on realism in the driving experience that the player has while playing the game. The game has a long history and was first released in 1997. This realism takes many forms, including the Academy.

GT Academy was the brainchild of Darren Cox, who worked in Nissan’s UK marketing department. In 2016, Cox explained that the idea came about during a co-promotion with Sony in 2006, where the prize was a genuine new Nissan 350Z. The participants had to compete in GT and on a real track to determine the winner.
