Sony has sold 4.5 million PS5 -apkrig units in less than two months

At the end of last November, Sony confidently stated that the launch of the PlayStation 5 broke the previous record associated with the launch of the PS4. However, specific sales statistics were not released and the only thing on which to base it was seven-year-old figures for sales of more than 2.1 million PlayStation 4 in less than a month. However, the clarification now comes with financial results for the third quarter of the 2020 financial period (October-December), which confirms that Sony has already shipped 4.5 million PS5 units. Due to the situation on the market, it is safe to state that the number of shipped pieces is equal to the number sold and according to previous statistics we can mark launch PlayStation 5 for the most successful in the entire history of consoles.

Looking at other information about Sony’s gaming activities, the company saw a 30 percent increase in PlayStation time compared to last year last December. The report also states that 87 percent of PS5 owners have an active PlayStation Plus service and the total subscriber base has reached 47.4 million in nominal numbers. Compared to the previous quarter, this is an increase of almost 2 million subscribers, and year-on-year by 8.6 million. Analyst Daniel Ahmad also explains on Twitter that revenue from PS Plus, as well as PS Now and advertising on PlayStation Network, was over $ 3.5 billion in the calendar year 2020, underlining that, of course, sales of the games themselves are not included.

That the selling price does not correspond to the cost of manufacturing the console is not unusual and should be offset over the coming months to years.

However, this was also unusually successful in the past quarter, recording a year-on-year increase of 50 percent, driven mainly by the success of Spider-Man: Miles Morales, which sold over 4 million units. Sony’s gaming division has revenues of approximately $ 4.2 billion, of which less than $ 500 million comes from the sale of physical copies of individual titles. Nevertheless, this part of the revenue is important to cover the loss of the PlayStation 5, which Sony directly points out in the report.

However, the fact that the selling price does not correspond to the cost of production of the console is not unusual and in the course of the coming months to years there should be a settlement, resp. turnover to profit. In addition, it is not known whether both models are loss-making, or just cheaper digital editions without optical drives. If you’re interested in PS4 sales, there was a significant drop in the calendar year 2020 compared to the previous year – from 14.6 million units sold to just 6.2 million units – with only 1.4 million units sold in that quarter.

As for the forecasts for the last quarter, respectively. throughout the financial period, optimistic results led Sony to reconsider. The company expects to end the year with a profit of $ 3.2 billion, instead of the expected 2.9 billion, which is expected to be helped by the gaming segment.
