With the Galaxy S21, Samsung wants to release a top smartphone for 2021 that should set standards – both in the Android camp and against the Apple competition. According to current benchmarks, the Snapdragon 888 is very fast. But is it enough for the big competitor?
The Snapdragon 888 will power the Galaxy S21 in some regions. In the Geekbench 5 test, the Qualcomm chipset with one core achieved a score of 1135 points, reports AnandTech. With several cores, the Snapdragon 888 achieves 3794 points. For comparison: The iPhone 12 Pro with the A14 achieved 1603 points with one core and 4187 points with multiple cores.
The A13 in the iPhone 11 Pro beats the Snapdragon 888 with at least one core: with the result of 1331 points. With several cores and 3366, the A13 is inferior to the chip of the Galaxy S21, if only just barely. In the GFXBench graphics comparison, the new Snapdragon chip even has to admit defeat to the iPhone SE.
Energy consumption important for comparison
However, it is important here: Energy consumption is a decisive factor in assessing the actual performance. It is important that the Snapdragon 888 manages to land between 4 and 4.5 watts. Then he could maintain the “peak performance”, ie the maximum performance, over a longer period of time – and the Android flagships of 2021 would be superior to the iPhone 12 and Co.
If Samsung throttles the chip, however, it could look bad for the Galaxy S21 in a direct comparison. However, benchmarks only ever give a rough idea of the performance of the chipsets. The differences are usually hardly noticeable in everyday life. Nevertheless, it is good to know that the iPhone 11 (Pro) can at least theoretically compete with the Galaxy S21.
In Europe again with Exynos chip?
Another question is more interesting for the European market: How powerful is the new Exynos 2100 from Samsung? Because according to rumors, the Galaxy S21 will be equipped with this chip in this country, while the Snapdragon 888 is used in the USA, among other places. According to a benchmark result from November 2020, the Exynos does not come close to the A14 from Apple. But there have also been other results.
The Galaxy S21 is said to offer a significantly longer battery life than its predecessor. It will be exciting to see whether Samsung is actually increasing the price range between the standard and the ultra model: How expensive are the individual versions? We’ll soon know more: In mid-January 2021, Samsung will supposedly present the successor to the Galaxy S20 and Co. to the public.
