Samsung’s patent shows a selfie camera in a scroll screen

Company Samsung is currently the largest manufacturer of flexible displays in the world and, of course, owns a number of patents for folding devices. Its latest patent according to the Dutch portal LetsGoDigital shows a smartphone with a scroll screen in which a selfie camera is hidden.

The scrolling mechanism has several advantages

The South Korean giant filed an application with the USPTO in November last year. Included in the database of the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) database and published only a few days ago on 17 June. The 45-page documentation describes a patent for a device that should bear the name Galaxy Z Slide or Galaxy Z Roll.

Samsung currently offers the Galaxy Z Fold2 5G folding smartphone and the Galaxy Z Flip 5G folding model on the market. In both cases, in the closed state, the display is folded in its half with the help of a flexible mechanism. The new patent now shows a different folding mechanism, in which the flexible display is rolled around the scroll module on one side and, when extended to the right, this part expands to its full size.

The advantage of this mechanism could be in the smaller thickness of the smartphone and especially in the lower probability of damage. The device also resembles a classic smartphone more when closed and does not need another external display. And last but not least, it doesn’t need two selfie cameras like the Galaxy Z Fold2.

Selfie camera integrated directly into the scroll screen

The selfie camera of the patented device is even more interesting in that it is not placed in the hole of the display, as usual. According to the patent, the Galaxy Z Slide / Galaxy Z Roll should use selfie camera technology directly in the display, as used by, for example, the ZTE Axon 20 5G smartphone. While in the closed state, the camera is in the upper right part of the display, when it is extended, it remains in the middle of its upper part.

There is also a fingerprint sensor in the display, which will not surprise anyone today. The back belongs to the camera with three sensors in a vertical position and, as described, a heart rate sensor. It was used in the past by older Samsung flagships, but the South Korean giant abandoned it in their newer generations.
