Samsung’s new patent shows a rollable and flexible device
So far, it’s just a patent, which doesn’t have to mean anything, given that companies are still patenting something. But at the very least, it looks interesting and groundbreaking. Just because it will be the first rollable and flexible device at the same time. However, it would be a shame not to imagine it and not to show it to you, our readers. The report was brought by the GSMAren portal.
The first rollable and flexible device at the same time
The patent, entitled “ELECTRONIC DEVICE, CAPABLE BENDING AND EXTRACTION”, shows a device that goes to new dimensions in terms of bending the display in all possible directions. But first we have a retractable aspect of the device – you grab it from two sides and pull it out to make it longer. This will give you a bigger screen when you need it and reduce it when you don’t need it. Easy to perform, but more complicated to implement.
A more interesting and strange aspect is the bending of this display. The part of the display at the opposite end, somehow separated from the scrollable part, so that it can be folded. It contains a certain type of hinge, which allows it to bend.
This hinge also slides with the display when you pull it out or slide it in. It uses four rollers, which we also know from other flexible Samsung devices. Thanks to them, the display can be bent and separated from the body of the smartphone.
We assume that the hinge works on the principle of rotation, as is the case with current flexible devices. This allows the display to tilt freely. However, the display cannot be fully closed without a gap.
The idea is great, but why would anyone need a roll-up device and add a flexible hinge? In addition, it complicates both types of construction.
Competition
So far, we’ve only seen scrollable displays or folding displays. But not both in one. TCL has shown its scrollable display, Oppo as well as Samsung.
