Samsung unveils super-fast SSD and this costs it

Samsung today announced the 980 NVme, a lightning-fast SSD. And this is going to cost the Solid State Drive.

With the 980 NVme, Samsung immediately has news to report on the applied technology. This Samsung SSD does not have DRAM. Previously, SSDs without a DRAM cache performed less well, but Samsung has found the solution, they say. That solution is in the Host Memory Buffer (HMB) in the 980. In combination with the sixth generation V-NAND and the HMB technology just mentioned, you have up to six times the speed of SATA SSDs. That sounds promising, of course.

Sequential read and write speeds are 3,500 and 3,000 MB / s, respectively. And for the connoisseur, random read and write speeds can reach 500K IOPS and 480K IOPS, respectively.

Other innovations are TurboWrite 2.0 for improved performance and the Full Power Mode. The latter is a new gadget of the Magician 6.3 software. With the Full Power Mode you can always keep the drive running at its best. Handy if, for example, you play games or are working with extremely large files. There is a built-in security that prevents the SSD from overheating.

Prices for the new Samsung 980 NVme SSD start at € 59.99 (250 GB). The variant with 500 GB costs € 79.99 and for 1 TB you pay € 149.99. The SSD is available from today.
