Samsung is no longer the leader in the semiconductor market
Bad news for Samsung: it has lost its top position in the global semiconductor market. Intel is now the largest manufacturer. Semiconductors are important: they are the circuits that you place on a chip, especially for a certain function. Samsung had the lead, but that is now ahead of Intel, partly due to the contraction in the semiconductor market.

Market research firm Omdia (via BusinessKorea) studied the performance of the global semiconductor market. It reports that the market was $147 billion in the third quarter of 2022, which is a significant drop. In the second quarter of this year that was still 7 percent higher (158 billion dollars).
Probably the biggest news is not so much that Samsung has lost the lead: it is that the semiconductor market seems to be going down again. Since 2020, there has been only growth in this market for 8 quarters, which would almost make you think that the corona virus mainly affected other things and not semiconductors. However, that is not the case: the demand for electronic products increased to such an extent due to the corona virus that the semiconductor market has yet to suffer.

According to the research bureau, this is mainly due to memory. “The memory market saw profits fall 27 percent quarter-over-quarter due to inventory adjustments by customers and a decline in demand for chips from data centers, PCs and mobile devices,” said researcher Cliff Rimbach. of memory semiconductors (and that’s Samsung), then you’re out of luck. Companies saw a revenue drop of more than $10 billion in the third quarter. Intel reported revenue of $14.9 billion, while Samsung had to make do with “only” $ 14.6 billion, a decrease of no less than 28.1 percent.
