Samsung is already working on 6G with bands 50 times faster than 5G

5G is not even accessible everywhere yet as Samsung is already thinking of 6G. During an experiment conducted with the University of Santa Barbara in California, the manufacturer achieved up to 50 times faster than currently available.

The general public is hardly discovering the effects of 5G on their connection speeds. In France, the new generation mobile network is only available in a few cities. Consumption is a small percentage compared to 4G. Telephony players are already looking towards 6G. At Samsung, researchers in collaboration with the University of Santa Barbara have just published the results of their experiment.

A speed of 6 Gb / s obtained by Samsung but only in the laboratory

In a press release sent by the manufacturer on June 16, it unveils the results of its experiments around 6G. In a lab, Samsung was able to achieve a total throughput of 6.2 Gbps on a 140 GHz band. The distance recorded between the transmitter and the receiver was 15 meters. Optimal conditions without any interference having been noted. In order to achieve this result, the technology named beamforming has been used. This involves concentrating several beams on the desired product. A system already used for 5G as well as Wi-Fi 6.

The ambition displayed by the Asian company was to explore terahertz frequencies in 6G communications. At this quantity, the spectrum would be multiplied. The speed at its peak could also be fifty times greater than in 5G. Likewise, the latency would be 10 times less. A question still arises on the usefulness of such a connection speed. While for 5G the public debate is still full of questions. Associations such as Phonegate Alert warn of the potential for health hazards around these issues.

For Samsung, the usefulness of such a connection speed is obvious. Experiments in extended reality as well as the uses of holograms are cited as practical cases. The Asian company seeks to take the turn of the 6G in order to file a maximum of patents and to pose also as an equipment manufacturer. With the fall of Huawei, a place is to be taken.
