Samsung Galaxy Upcycling makes old phones useful again

Samsung makes old smartphones useful again with the Galaxy Upcycling at Home program. And it is good for the environment too.

During CES 2021, Samsung will announce a great initiative called Galaxy Upcycling at Home. With this, the billion-dollar company promises to release updates for older smartphones. Those updates, on the other hand, turn useless devices into internet of things devices (IoT). This significantly increases the usefulness of an old forgotten device and saves Mother Earth a lot of extra mess.

A few years ago, Samsung first announced their Galaxy Upcycling initiative. It had to reduce environmental pollution from old electronics. In contrast, so far we have heard little about the concept. Until the current CES tech fair.

Samsung announces a software update that can make old Galaxy smartphones useful again. That is how the South Korean company cites the example of a baby monitor; users can transform an old smartphone into a refined baby monitor that makes contact with the local internet and possibly communicates with your current device.

Another application has everything to do with the light sensor of old smartphones. For example, you can turn a Galaxy S6 into a smart sensor where it automatically detects light and its lack and turns on smart lights.

The latter may be a bit of a cumbersome application of a simple light sensor. But on the other hand, it is better to use an old smart device for trifles. The alternative is a refined dust collector. Or even worse, a barely recyclable piece of waste in a landfill.

If you want to be very critical, you can suggest whether Samsung should just extend the software support of their smartphones. Why not 10 years of support ?! Of course that costs a lot of money, not to mention the cyber security risks that increase over the years.

It is not yet known when Samsung will roll out the promised Galaxy Upcycling at Home updates. It also remains to be seen which older smartphones will receive support.
