Samsung explains its 4-year update policy

We have recently written about Samsung’s commitment to upgrade certain models for 4 years. Of course, these are security updates, most models will no longer receive any updates to improve features after about two to three major Android OS updates. You can find which models receive monthly, quarterly or semi-annual updates on the Samsung website. The theme was brought by Sammobile.

What will it look like in the 4th year for Samsung devices?

The life cycle of smartphones will go from monthly updates, through quarterly updates, and finally the phones will only receive half-yearly updates. This is the life cycle of flagships. The middle class devices have it shorter by the first phase. They only receive quarterly updates. While the older Samsung Galaxy S9 is still in the phase of monthly updates, every model from the middle class (also from this year) is automatically in quarterly updates. For example, the new Samsung Galaxy A32 or A42 models.

After 2 years, the frequency of updates should decrease. After 4 years, Samsung devices should only receive updates every six months. Yes, it’s nothing special, but it’s much better support than other manufacturers. It is not clear at what time users can expect the two updates in Year 4, but the last one will probably come at the end of Year 4.

Currently, mid-range devices from 2017 and 2018 receive half-yearly updates. These are the following 35 models:

  • Galaxy S8 Lite, Galaxy Note FE
